This week we meet Lyndon, one of our Graduate Geo-Environmental Consultants, to learn more about his journey into the sector and what life at Subadra looks like in the early stages of a consulting career.
What inspired you to pursue a career in environmental and geotechnical consulting?
I enjoy hands-on work and being in outdoor environments. I also have a strong interest in earth science, particularly how rocks and minerals form and shape the planet.
What is your educational and career background?
I hold a degree in Environmental Sciences along with a master’s and PhD in Geography and Environmental Sciences. Before beginning my master’s, I worked as an environmental consultant in South Africa. During my master’s program, I started lecturing in geography and environmental sciences at my university, and I continued lecturing throughout my PhD. I was also asked to teach geography at my local high school. After relocating to the UK, I worked as a telecommunications designer before moving into my current role.
What is your current role and what does a typical day look like?
I am currently a Geo-Environmental Consultant, and a typical day involves onsite work such as soil logging, gas monitoring, plate load testing, and water monitoring.
What is your favourite part of your job?
The variability of each day.
What skills or qualities are most important for someone in this line of work?
Diligence and an eye for minor details.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in environmental or geotechnical consulting?
You spend most of your time outdoors in all types of weather, and unexpected challenges can arise without warning. Staying resilient and composed helps you manage them effectively. Ultimately, the work is not life-threatening, and a steady approach will carry you through most situations.
And finally, what does a perfect day at work look like for you?
Working on site in the warmth of the sun, surrounded by a beautiful field overlooking the ocean. The site work progresses smoothly, and your samples encounter artefacts such as fossils or unique minerals.
We are delighted to have Lyndon as part of the Subadra team and look forward to seeing his continued growth and success.
